Nurom Next by The Northern Block—Unified over a decade. Unified with respect. Unified by design.
The Northern Block have taken on an ultramarathon in attention to detail, to create a unique, adaptable sans-serif. It’s a typeface that’s evolved over time, developing alongside technology, shifting mindsets, and new needs.
See with global vision.
Speak with an international voice.
Think with a multi-lateral mind.
Act as a unified movement.
Ten years in the making, Nurom Next is a true collaboration, shaped by an international team. With a collective approach and a shared perspective, each pair of hands that Nurom Next has passed through on its journey, has brought something different to the typeface. There’s an alchemy to that, conjured and driven by one question—
‘Design is a universal language, so why isn’t type?’
It had to be unifying, and usable. Legible, and fresh. Not a revival or a reboot. The work has been done to make sure this is no pastiche. Nurom Next distinguishes itself by combining historical inspiration with a contemporary neo-grotesque style, incorporating warmer and irregular elements, and the clean lines, balanced proportions and the geometric principles of the neo-grotesque. It deserves to be looked at. It deserves time and consideration.
‘Quiet is better than loud.’—Dieter Rams
Nurom Next isn’t made to stand out, but it can, on almost any street corner on Earth. It supports over 280 Latin-based languages, as well as Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew and Vietnamese. It’s a typeface that can offer something to global design, inspired by obvious universal solutions, like the periodic table.
Nurom Next’s core strengths are clarity, functionality, and readability across various applications. It just does its job, bridging medias and cultures, bringing clarification. Delivering accessibility, and a responsiveness to the evolving needs of a multicultural and multilingual design environment.
Whether applied in print or digital media, the typeface’s versatility ensures its suitability for a diverse range of projects. Ready to perform under the pressure of modern technology and digital landscapes, it doesn’t buckle under the pressure of increased pixelation, with strokes concluding at precise ninety-degree angles. It’s made with workable small details that showcase its neutrality and legibility.
Culture is a bridge to understanding.
Culture is a unifier.
Art is universal.
Design is a language.
All cultures, one bridge.
Language is a bridge.
That neutrality allows Hebrew to breathe, and show its own beauty and complexity. Hebrew is an historic script, so the work to bring this into the typeface, is a kind that demands respect and cultural sensitivity. It took Senior Type Designer, Tasos Varipatis, two months of intensive work, and the support of Hebrew Consultant, Liron Lavi Turkenich, to get it right, and apply that respect to every detail.
It’s an ethos that’s stretched the length of the project to make sure Nurom Next has total continuity when crossing global audiences, keeping the message tight. There aren’t many typefaces out there that can truly do this. Alongside Hebrew, Cyrillic and Greek have also been shown close attention to detail. Each language iteration has been designed with respect, intensity, and a hyper-focus on clarity.
Because light is universal, cultural respect is also applied to negative space, with the white spaces given equality. The light, the space, as part of a symphony. Nurom Next’s operational level is high. Horizontal, verticals and multi angles all offer different perspectives. A quality that comes when a typeface finishes beyond ninety or one hundred and eighty degrees.
Nurom Next has sensibilities and individuality, in all of the languages it comes in, while achieving unification. It’s an international style with global appeal. With a distinctive personality and a focus on staying responsive to global design trends, it can become a valuable and contemporary tool for designers.
100% local.
100% universal.
100% understood.
In a world that feels increasingly short on unity, and obese with duplicity and misinformation—this is a typeface that can deliver a seamless common identity, and moments of clarity. It can bridge cultures, formats and contexts, and speak your truth to people across the world. Nurom Next won’t solve every problem on the planet we share, but it might solve one—always speak the language.
