Font Technician Apprentice

Full-time, hybrid (UK-based)
Targeted Salary upon Completion of Apprenticeship: £25,000 - £30,000 per annum (based on performance and experience)

The Northern Block is a leading company in the field of typeface design, committed to delivering high-quality font solutions to a diverse client base. As part of our new strategy, we are seeking an enthusiastic individual with a passion for design and typography to join our team as a Font Technician Apprentice. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is eager to learn and grow in the field of typeface design, with a blend of in-office and remote work flexibility.

We are looking for a motivated individual to join our team as a Font Technician Apprentice. In this role, you will work closely with experienced Designers and experts to learn the fundamentals of typeface design and font development. This is a hands-on learning opportunity where you will have the chance to contribute to real projects while receiving guidance and mentorship from seasoned professionals.

Responsibilities:

• Assist the design team with various tasks related to font development, including research, concept ideation, and design exploration.

• Learn and apply typography principles, including letterforms, spacing, kerning, and legibility, under the guidance of experienced mentors.

• Gain proficiency in industry-standard design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, FontLab, Glyphs, etc., through structured training and practical experience.

• Collaborate with team members to refine font designs based on feedback from clients and stakeholders.

• Participate in team meetings and brainstorming sessions to contribute ideas and insights to ongoing projects.

• Take ownership of assigned tasks and projects, demonstrating a strong work ethic and a commitment to learning and improvement.

• A combination of in-office and remote work, providing flexibility and convenience.

Requirements:

• Strong GCSE and A-level grades, especially in subjects related to IT, graphic design, mathematics or science.

• A keen interest in typography and font technology, with a desire to pursue a career in font development.

• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

• Basic proficiency in computer software and familiarity with design tools is preferred but not required.

• Interest in computer coding, particularly Python scripting, is highly beneficial.

• Comfortable with both in-office and remote work setups, with access to necessary tools and equipment for remote work.
