The Northern Block’s Angusta typeface snaps up a win in the Communication Arts Typography Competition.
The Northern Block’s Angusta typeface has been announced as a winner in the 14th Annual Typography Competition by Communication Arts Magazine.
Communication Arts is a professional journal for those involved in visual communications. Now in its 65th year, the magazine continues to showcase the very best in the creative industry.
From 1,262 entries submitted to this year’s competition, a jury of creative professionals selected 125 winning projects. Angusta is one of sixteen successful projects to snap up an award in the ‘Typeface Design’ category for its ‘creative excellence and quality of execution’.
Angusta will be featured in the January/February 2024 Typography Annual by Communication Arts Magazine, both in print and digital editions, with more than 25,000 copies distributed worldwide. Each winning entrant also receives a personalised ‘Award of Excellence’—one of the most coveted awards in the industry.
Designed by Tasos Varipatis and released by The Northern Block in 2023, Angusta is a highly versatile and elegant display serif type family. The typeface draws inspiration from American wood type of the 19th century and features an extra-condensed design with tightly spaced letterforms. High contrast between thick and thin strokes gives Angusta a bold, striking appearance, making it perfect for headlines, titles, and other large-scale typography. Augusta’s sharp elongated serifs are detailed and elegant, giving it a refined and sophisticated look. The serifs also add a sense of movement to the letterforms, making them feel dynamic and alive.
Senior Type Designer, Tasos, shares his thoughts on the win,
“I’m absolutely thrilled that Angusta, my debut typeface project with The Northern Block, has clinched a prestigious Communication Arts Award. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m immensely proud of our team’s dedication and unwavering support. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration and hard work of every team member. I am more than excited about what the future holds. Here’s to many more creative chapters in the world of type design.”
